Jazz Tonic

My friends and fellow selectors, Mixmaster Noah Massey and A-Ski started one hell of a weekly jazz night at Broadway Bar in downtown L.A. last month. It's quickly becoming hump day's spot to be and for good reason. Every Wednesday night, they enlist the help of top shelf DJ talent, live musicians, MCs and poets to bring you the best that all forms of jazz have to offer.

Tonight, I'll be spinning some of my favorite jazz records with other featured guest DJs Al Jackson and Lotus Petal. Josh Koslow will be dropping some live trumpet and the night is hosted by jazz poet, AK Toney. As a special treat, the maestro, Mr. Benjamin Bertsch of IFLOZ will be dosing you with some ill visuals for a little background atmosphere.

I'll be starting the night off at 9PM sharp so be sure to come down early if you'd like to catch my set. I have some serious vinyl gems in store for you this evening and I'm quite excited to share this beautiful music with all of you.

Broadway Bar is a fantastic venue with classy decor, friendly staff, nicely priced drink specials ($4 cocktails & $3 Stellas) and ample parking. It's located at 830 S. Broadway between 8th and 9th. Hope to see you there! Stop by tonight but if you can't make it don't fret. There's always next Wednesday and fortunately for all of us... they do it up right every week. Lots of love!

P.S. If you're not able to join us in physical form but would like to listen in, tune in to Astronaut Disco by following this link:

Softcore - July '10 Mixtape Party

Here's a little somethin' I put together for a mixtape party that a couple of my friends threw this July.  This isn't "mixed" together as a traditional DJ mix would be.  Rather, it's a collection of songs (mostly new and a few older ones) that I've been feeling as of late.  Figured I'd share it with the rest of you as well.  Enjoy!

Tracks:

3. It's A Shame (Spinners cover) - Raphael Saadiq
4. Suspicious Minds - Elvis Presley
5. Care - Kaada
6. Don't Worry Baby - The Beach Boys
7. Boyfriend - Best Coast
8. Bhang Bhang, I'm A Burnout - Dum Dum Girls

Stream Best Coast's Debut Album - Crazy For You

You may very well have heard "When I'm With You" and "Boyfriend" already as they've been floating around for a minute.  Now you can stream Crazy For You, the debut album from Bethany Cosentino and company (better known as Best Coast).  Fuzzy, lo-fi beach pop at its finest.  The album's official release is set for July 27th on Mexican Summer.

Stream Big Boi's New Album

Mr. Patton has certainly outdone himself with this one.  It's been quite some time since I've been this excited about a hip-hop album.  I've been bumping several tracks for a few months now but after listening to "Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty" in it's entirety today, it quickly became apparent that the album as a whole is solid and then some.  Mucho impressive.  Although it won't be released until July 6th, you can stream it now over at his myspace.  Now if only Andre would release an album soon.  He may have a tough time following this one up though.

Diplo Vs. Sunday Girl - Four Floors

Sunday Girl is 21 year old Jade Williams from Broxbourne, England. Four Floors is her debut single which was released on 3.28.10. Diplo does his thang with a nice dubsteppish re-work of it. Definitely digging this. Free download courtesy of RCRD LBL.

The Morning Benders - Excuses

This just might be my favorite song at the moment. Can't stop listening to it and haven't come anywhere close to tiring of it yet. Excuses is the first track on their album "Big Echos" which was released on 3.9.10. I've listened to the entire album a few times now. Good stuff all the way through but this track is undoubtedly an infectious hit. Love the painting of people frolicking in the water on the cover also. They're out on tour now and will be doing a grip of shows with Broken Bells starting in San Diego next month.

Cults - Go Outside

Inspired by the lovely, warm and sunny day we're having here in southern California, I was inclined to share one of my favorite new tracks with you.  It's the latest single from Cults, a guy and gal who are apparently film students living in the Big Apple.  The song is quite catchy and I haven't been able to get it out of my head for a few days now.  Free download over at Pitchfork.  Scope it out.

Listen To The New Broken Bells Album

Hear the brand spankin' new Broken Bells album in it's entirety before the official release date of Tuesday, March 9th.  In case you haven't yet heard, Broken Bells is the collaborative effort between James Mercer of The Shins and artist/producer extraordinaire Danger Mouse (The Grey Album, Gnarls Barkley).  Enjoy!  I'm loving it so far.  Just wish I could've snagged tickets to their sold out show on March 14th at The Troubadour.  (If anyone has an extra.... PLEASE let me know.)
